The awards were handed in by Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian.

The award ceremony was followed by a speech delivered by the Prime Minister. The Premier congratulated the teaching staff, students and alumni on the University’s 95th anniversary, wished them every success in future activities and new achievements.

“On November 3, 1921 a school was established by the Yerevan municipal hospital - a medical training center – which was the first academic institution. Then the school was reorganized into the medical faculty of the Yerevan State University, enabling Armenian youth to get high-quality medical education. The launch of the medical faculty was due to significant contribution and valuable efforts made by Askanaz Mravyan, Semyon Lazarev, as well as a number of prominent representatives of the older generation of Soviet doctors,” Hovik Abrahamyan said.

The Prime Minister said that all along its decades-long history, the University has become a specialized foundry of medical personnel, where many generations of highly-skilled doctors have been educated.

“A series of important reforms have been implemented in the Yerevan State Medical University over the past few years, including in particular, the establishment of the new simulation training center and the fully refurbished clinics that provide all the necessary conditions for modern education provided to both local and foreign students. Mr. Ashotyan reported that 25 percent of the University’s students come from abroad, which is an important credit to the University.

The doctor’s profession is particular in that all doctors swear before the start of activities, pledging that they shall be guided by not only professional knowledge, but also humanity and compassion, never forgetting that they deal with human life and health.

YSMU graduates have constituted a stable labor market, providing a strong evidence of their competitiveness both in Armenia and abroad. Armenian doctors have gained a good reputation and standing all over the world, which gives us pride and the opportunity to assess the key role of the State Medical University,” the Prime Minister said.
