PM chairs meeting on preparations for agricultural activities





Chaired by Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, a consultation was held in the Office of Government, attended by Minister of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations Armen Yeritsyan, Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan, Marz governors and representatives of different government agencies.

The meeting discussed the ongoing preparations and the activities scheduled for the spring agricultural campaign, as well as the results of the programs implemented in the previous year.

The Government’s programs aimed at providing farmers with affordable seeds, fertilizers and diesel fuel, promoting the breeding of pedigree livestock, developing infrastructure were said to have significantly contributed to the advancement of domestic farm industry. In particular, there is an increase in the production of grain crops that has been a long way toward enhancing the country’s self-sufficiency in food-staples. While the level of grain self-sufficiency was 36 percent in 2010, it reached the mark of 51 percent in 2014. At the same time, the amount of cultivated land has increased gone by about 15 thousand hectares, with a tangible rise recorded in the production of various commodities.

The Minister of Agriculture stressed as instructed by the Prime Minister, all of the State support programs will be continued this year. He advised that the second stage of the cooperative farm promotion program will be launched in collaboration with the World Bank, involving some 100 communities nationwide.

It was noted that the first stage, which covered 50 rural communities, has helped provide farmers with new agricultural machinery, coordinate agricultural activities and achieve increase in livestock. Five slaughterhouses will be commissioned this year to lead to enhanced food security.

The meeting also touched upon the preparations for the upcoming irrigation season. It was noted that the necessary measures are being implemented to ensure that all stations should be ready to start the season.

Summarizing the discussion, Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan said he would closely monitor the preparations for the agricultural season. The head of government made a point of efficient cooperation between government agencies and regional administrations, urging those responsible to take initiative in solving the problems and implementing new programs.

Emphasizing that the Government is ready to assist with the solution of a variety of issues, Hovik Abrahamyan stressed the importance of having the combined efforts of all the stakeholders.

In conclusion, the meeting looked at issues concerning the improvement of efficiency in the activities of regional administrations.
