Prime Minister Welcomes Karl Lamers

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan received member of Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany, former NATO Parliamentary Assembly President Karl Lamers.

Pleased with the current pace of Armenian-German relations, the Premier highlighted the need to build on and further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Stressing that Germany is Armenia’s number one trade partner among the EU States, Hovik Abrahamyan highly appreciated the fact that the German government has provided Armenia about 464 million euros in financial and technical assistance since independence.

The Prime Minister said to have maintained warm relationship with Bundestag President Norbert Lammert since the time when he was President of the National Assembly and that in general, there is a high level of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

In turn, Mr Lamers congratulated Hovik Abrahamyan on appointment to the post of Prime Minister and wished him fruitful work. The Bundestag member said that our country has always been represented at the highest level in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and that he sees a good friend and a reliable partner in the face of Armenia.

At the request of Mr Lamers, Prime Minister Abrahamyan referred to the prospects of Armenia’s involvement in integration processes (Customs Union, European Union), the geopolitical situation in the region, the pace and the development of our country’s relations with neighboring countries. The importance of a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as negotiated within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group was emphasized on either side.

The parties exchanged views on the prospects of EU-Armenia relationship. Hovik Abrahamyan stressed that Armenia is interested in maintaining and enhancing the quality and dynamics of its relations with the European Union, which will help ensure continuity of reforms and achieve a higher level of cooperation. Mr Lamers assured that Germany is willing to support our country in its effort to deepen and broaden interaction with the European Union.
