Prime Minister Welcomes ASEU Gyumri Branch Students

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan received today a delegation of Armenia State Economics University Gyumri Branch students. In attendance was ASEU Rector Koryun Atoyan. The meeting was meant to address the situation faced over the election of a student council president.

The Student Council (SC) members said to be pleased with the conditions available at the University in general, though they had some concerns regarding the procedure for election of a student council chairperson. Particular resentment had caused the management’s decision to amend the university charter, reserving to the faculty instead of the students themselves (as it used to be previously) the right to choose a president of the student council. Due to the above, the students boycotted the election two days ago, after which the management agreed to hold the election along the lines acceptable to the students.

Listening to the students, the Prime Minister told Koryun Atoyan to demand an explanation from the university administration regarding their controversial decision and urged them to reinstate the former procedure.

The SC members thanked the Premier for audience, as well as for keeping in spotlight and quick responsiveness to their concerns. The Prime Minister promised to call at the Gyumri branch of the University in the near future to get a first-hand view of the existing problems.
