Armenia, Iraq Interested In Closer Partnership






Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan received a governmental delegation led by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Roush Nuri Shaueys.

Pleased with the current level of cooperation, Tigran Sargsyan described it as quite successful.

“Armenia is appreciative of and interested in the development and deepening of relationship with Iraq. We see that there is great potential for the expansion of cooperation, a vivid evidence of which is last year’s significant growth in trade turnover,” the Prime Minister said.

Noting that either Iraq is interested in the development of relations with Armenia, Nuri Shaueys said his delegation features a large group of Iraqi businessmen whose goal is to establish new contacts with Armenian partners.

The parties made a point of launching of direct flights between the two countries and facilitating of the visa regime. According to Tigran Sargsyan, Armenian construction firms are interested in participating in the field-related programs in Iraq. Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister welcomed the idea and expressed willingness to discuss it with Iraqi government officials.

Touching upon Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union, Tigran Sargsyan mentioned that Armenia can serve as a bridge for the strengthening of Iraq’s relations with CU-member countries. Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Armenia’s membership to the CU, which will only contribute to the development of economic relations and the implementation of new projects.

The Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister conveyed warm greetings on behalf of his country’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliqi. In turn, Tigran Sargsyan asked Roush Nuri Shaueys to forward an invitation to his Iraqi counterpart to visit Armenia at any time convenient for him.

In conclusion, attended by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, Armenia Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Gevorgyan and Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq Roush Nuri Shaueys signed an agreement on cooperation in the spheres of economy, trade, science and technology.
