Prime Minister Meets Russian, European Media Representatives

Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan met with the participants of a Matenadaran-hosted international media forum in Yerevan, which is held on October 17-20 under the motto of “At the foothills of Mount Ararat.”

In the context of rapid changes in global developments, the Prime Minister referred to his government’s program and policy, one of the peculiarities of the Armenian people - the Diaspora – and his vision of the Armenian World.

“First of all, we need to realize what kind of changes are taking place in today’s world and take into account the impact of global processes on our country and the region, as a whole, while building our programs. Intellectual capacity or, otherwise, the man is the main resource in the modern world. If we tend to develop, we first need to create a society of opportunities for self-expression. This means that priority should be placed on educational reform in order to prepare people to live in a rapidly changing world,” the Prime Minister noted.

Touching on the regional developments and Armenia’s steps, the Prime Minister said national security is now of paramount importance to our country, because unlike the neighboring countries, the geopolitical situation in the region is exercising a big influence on Armenia due to closed borders.

“I feel you can guess the reasons behind our decision to join the Customs Union and integrate with the Eurasian economic area. This is a tool for building stronger relationship with our strategic partner and major investor Russia. It can help us remove such restrictive factors as might arise, if Armenia remained outside of the Customs Union.
Intensive processes have been taking place within and round the Customs Union in recent years: if we fail to joint it now, new borders will be traced between Armenian and Russian businesses, which is unaffordable. That is why a political decision was made to continue developing Armenia’s economy along the lines of the Customs Union,”
Tigran Sargsyan said.

According to the Prime Minister, the decision has also geopolitical, cultural and security-related dimensions, because our country boasts deeply rooted ties with Russia.

The media forum has brought together 36 representatives from key Russian and European media outlets who will visit several communities in Armenia and Artsakh to prepare documentaries and news reports about our country
