A Women’s Grand Prix Chess Tournament Kicks Off In Dilijan
Attended by Vice President of the Armenian Chess Federation, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, a women’s Grand Prix chess tournament started in Dilijan (Tavush Marz). The event will last through June 29.
Welcoming the participants and FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov on behalf of President of the Armenian Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan and the Government of Armenia, Tigran Sargsyan stated in part, “Chess has almost become a lifestyle in our country thanks to world champion Tigran Petrosian. This Grand Prix is just held under this aegis because exactly 50 years ago, Tigran Petrosian was crowned as the 9th world champion, fostering nationwide enthusiasm over common ideals.”
The Prime Minister wished every success and exciting games to all the participants of the tournament.
The Grand Prix is attended by 12 top female chess players from India, Russia, Ukraine, Mongolia, Georgia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Armenia.
The Dilijan tournament is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Tigran Petrosian’s historic win against Mikhail Botvinnik in 1963.
