Tigran Sargsyan: “NGO initiatives are in the best interest of our people”

Later today Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan visited the residence of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Primate of the Western Diocese Archbishop Hovnan Terteryan briefed the Premier on the ongoing activities and programs of the diocese. Then the Prime Minister met with the representatives of the Armenian community in Southern California, and answered their questions relating to Armenia’s internal and external problems.

After the meeting, Tigran Sargsyan approached a group of U.S.-based Teghut protection civil initiative activists crowded nearby who conveyed to the Prime Minister their concerns about a number of environmental issues, including one related to the operation of mines in Armenia.

Addressing the protesters, the Prime Minister said: “We closely follow your movement and are well aware of your concerns. Moreover, we have had several meetings with the representatives of your movement.”

Tigran Sargsyan said his government welcomes the efforts of civil society organizations, their activities and initiatives, as they are in the best interest of our people. “If there was no activity, no organization to promote public interest in a particular area, if people were not committed to specific ideas, it would be impossible to build a civil society. The duty of the government is to provide such opportunities as might help you freely voice your concerns,” the head of government noted.

According to Tigran Sargsyan, the movement produces positive results, State agencies are taking into account the opinion voiced by the movement. “The government is supportive of your movement. I am convinced that our people and the country as a whole can benefit from the dialog. While many of your demands seem to be problematic, we are ready to discuss the issues trying to find mutually acceptable solutions. I am also glad that many of you are going to return to Armenia. It is my pleasure to invite you back home,” the Premier said in conclusion.

The visit of the Prime Minister of Armenia continues. On December 11, Tigran Sargsyan will attend the opening of “ArmTech 2012” forum.
