PM Prompts Agency Heads To Discuss Topical Issues With Environmentalists

Chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, the National Sustainable Development Council met in the Office of Government.

The participants discussed and approved a package of proposals to be submitted by the Republic of Armenia at the 2012 United Nations’ Rio +20 World Summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro next year. The proposals are drafted by the joint task force of the Ministry of Nature Protection, Ministry for Foreign Affairs and environmental organizations.

The representatives of environmental organizations stated their views on the construction of a small hydropower plant at Trchkani waterfall and gold extraction activities at Sotq, near Lake Sevan. In this connection, the Ministers of Nature Protection and Energy and Natural Resources came up with their own arguments. The ministers were told to discuss the matter with the environmentalists.

Tigran Sargsyan reminded that a presidential commission involving skilled experts is in place to handle the problems of Lake Sevan: “Sevan’s problems are kept under close control by the head of State whose actions are based on the findings of that commission. I suggest you cooperating with the commission in order to get the answers to your queries,” the Prime Minister advised the environmentalists.
