Prime Minister Visits Chaltr Village of Rostov

On the sidelines of his working visit to Rostov-on-Don, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan later yesterday visited the Armenian village of Chaltr in Myasnikyan region of Rostov Oblast.

After enjoying a warm welcome by the Armenian community of Chaltr, the head of government got acquainted with the activities, daily life and background history of local Armenians.

When at Chaltr's Sourb Hambardzoum church, the Prime Minister laid flowers at the cross-stone placed in the courtyard of the church and devoted to numerous Armenian martyrs who fell a prey to manmade and natural disasters, as well as at the memorial to Great Patriotic War victims. Tigran Sargsyan’s next port of call was the local museum of history and ethnography.

Rostov’s Myasnikyan region has 8 Armenian villages. Some 30.000 Armenians are living in this region, with 15.000 residing in Chaltr alone. Rev. Father Tadevos Haibaryan said the preservation of the Armenian identity is on the highest possible level: “The mother tongue is taught from early childhood in Armenian households. Armenian traditions, including the crafts and dishes, are observed very scrupulously over there.” Note that Myasnikyan region hosts Armenian Nor-Nakhichevan town, as well.
