Public sector modernization is a priority




Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan received today a World Bank delegation led by director of regional department for European and Central Asian economic policy Luca Barbone. In attendance was World Bank Armenia Office head Aristomene Varudakis. The delegation is in Armenia to attend a World Bank-hosted forum on migration and money transfers.

To begin with, Tigran Sargsyan thanked Mr. Varudakis for his 3-year-long efforts at the post of head of the World Bank Armenia Office. The parties went on to discuss the current status and development outlook of bilateral cooperation. The head of government briefed the guests on the Armenia’s economic position and the main challenges caused by the global crisis. In this context, he stressed the need of and the government’s efforts for economic diversification, improvement of business environment, creation of equal conditions for economic competition.

Public sector modernization was said to be a priority, inclusive of tax and customs reforms. Mr. Barbone reaffirmed the World Bank’s readiness to henceforth back reforms in Armenia.
