On regular and competitive presidential elections held in Armenia, EU High Commissioner for Common Foreign Policy and Security Xavier Solana has sent a congratulatory message to the Armenian. The message states in part:

"I wish to congratulate the people of Armenia on regular and competitive presidential elections and high voter turnout held on February 19. I am also pleased with the initial findings of the International Election Observation Mission, which states that the elections have been held in line with the OSCE and EU commitments and standards.

I hope that all political forces in the country will take up a responsible stance following these elections. Any complaint must be examined in detail and any irregularity has to be addressed in due form. All contradictions must be settled by means of a dialog.

The European Union will keep on strengthening the cooperation with Armenia based on the European Neighborhood Policy.

The presidential elections of Armenia are an opportunity for taking steps toward improving Armenia relations with neighboring countries. This includes the resumption of endeavors for the settlement of the Karabakh conflict. The European Union backs the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and will provide all needed support to the process of conflict settlement".
