Republic of Armenia Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan today has received newly appointed head of the EC delegation to Armenia and Georgia Peer Goran Ecklund. The Prime Minister congratulated Mr. Ecklund on his appointment and expressed hope that the constructive and effective cooperation started at the time of Mr. Torben Holtze would be continued, especially as the EU-Armenia Action Plan as approved this November within the framework of the European Neighborhood Policy was supposed to open up new opportunities for cooperation expansion and development. In stressing that Armenia was prepared to endeavor in the direction of program effectivity, Andranik Margaryan said that the European Commission, represented by the EC delegation to Armenia, would contribute significantly to this cause. The Prime Minister informed Mr. Ecklund that a President-chaired commission on coordination of work with the European structures had been established in Armenia and briefed him on the functions delegated to the newly established structure.


Andranik Margaryan noted that the activities of the EC delegation were appreciated in Armenia. Due to an arrangement signed between the Government of Armenia and the European Commission, currently the European Commission enjoys a higher level of representation in our country and has a full-powered delegation to our country. The Prime Minister noticed at the same time that considering the growing volume of Armenia-European Union policy agenda items, it would be expedient to have an EC ambassador with residence in Yerevan. He informed the guest that this matter had already been taken up with RA Minister for Foreign Affairs by European Neighborhood Policy Coordinator B. Ferrero-Valdneri.
