Today RA Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan has received Minister of Agriculture of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Reza Eskandari.


First of all, the Iranian Minister conveyed to the Prime Minister of Armenia best regards on behalf of the First Deputy President of Iran and the invitation to visit Iran in the near future. Then the parties referred to the expansion and development of bilateral cooperation in many areas emphasizing that this approach was anticipated in the arrangements reached during the July, 2006 meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Iran held in Tehran. Mentioning that the centuries-old friendship between the two peoples, their historical-cultural affinities and close ties created a solid framework for the development of bilateral relationship on the basis of mutual trust and respect, the Armenian Prime Minister and the Iranian Minister prioritized high-level contacts and the activities of Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission as a means for giving more practical character to the foregoing.


Satisfaction was expressed on either side at the recently stated positive shifts in bilateral economic relations with special emphasis placed on the cooperation in the energy sector inclusive of the construction of Iran-Armenia gas pipeline, the commissioning of a third high-voltage transmission line, the HPP to be built on the river Arax through joint efforts. The parties similarly emphasized the importance of the transport-related cooperation and mentioned the construction of an alternative Armenia-Iran motor-way which is supposed to facilitate cross-boundary traffic and enhance the attractiveness of Armenia along the north-south transportations axis. The parties also emphasized the construction of a railway line between Armenia and Iran, which is in its preparative stage currently, the activation of direct contacts between separate administrative units of the two countries, those programs implemented jointly in a number of fields that can be joined by agriculture as well. According to the Iranian Minister, there are vast possibilities for collaboration and exchange of know-how in this area. He noted that Iran had developed a strategic food security program and was trying to expand agriculture in several directions.


Mohammad Eskandari stressed the importance of the intergovernmental agreements on mutual protection of plants and phytosanitary quarantine, cooperation in the field of veterinary services and the memorandum of understanding to be signed with his Armenian counterpart during the present visit.
