Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan delivers a speech at the 64th session of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Council
Today, Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan participated in the 64th session of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Council, which is being held this year in Yerevan for the first time.
The Council session was attended by representatives of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, civil society, mining organizations, international partner organizations, the EITI International Secretariat, and representatives of about 100 EITI member countries.
In his welcoming speech, the Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated the ongoing cooperation between Armenia and the EITI international community, in particular, Tigran Khachatryan noted: “The holding of the EITI Council session in Armenia is a significant event as a guarantee of ongoing cooperation between Armenia and the EITI international community. Armenia’s membership in the EITI, in addition to being a sectoral initiative, is an important component of a much more comprehensive process, namely, open, accountable, and participatory governance. From the very first days of our membership, EITI has become a practical platform for the formation of an open dialogue between state institutions, civil society and business, ensuring real changes based on this."
In his speech, Tigran Khachatryan also touched upon the importance of effective and transparent management of natural resources: “Our goal now is to create a responsible, environmentally safe and socially just sector in parallel with the improvement of economic indicators, which is of particular importance in the context of the growing demand for natural resources, in particular, non-ferrous and rare metals, in parallel with the energy transition. The Mining Development Strategy of the Republic of Armenia, adopted in 2023, serves this purpose. It not only views EITI membership as an integral part of the mining industry management system, but also prioritizes the maintenance and expansion of the EITI standard through open, systematic and digital data management as an important tool for socio-economic development.”
Summing up his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to form a transparent and open management system aimed at using natural resources for the development of the entire society.
Within the framework of the EITI Board meeting, a private meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan and EITI Board Chair Helen Clark also took place.
