Statement by Republic of Armenia Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan at the expanded session of the European People’s Party Group Bureau

"Dear President,
Dear Colleagues,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my pleasure to attend this meeting of the European People’s Party. First, I would like to express gratitude for the opportunity of making an opening address at this important gathering. I am representing here not only the Government of Armenia, but also the Republican Party of Armenia.

Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to convey to you warmest greetings on the part of the President of the Republic of Armenia and my fellow RPA members. We are the eyewitnesses of dramatic transformations in Northern Africa and in the Middle East. Calls for a change can be heard amid the “Arab spring”. These appeals have a single goal, namely the achievement of democratic values. Some twenty years ago appeals for democracy and changes could be heard not so far from the Arab world - in Armenia - on the eve of Soviet Union’s collapse.

The period following independence was marked by a shift toward the ideals of democracy. Today we cannot imagine life without political pluralism, debates, economic and civic freedoms and human rights.

We went through many hardships on this way. As much as proud of our achievements, we should note that there have been serious deviations from the target. While we still face serious challenges, we have never questioned our adherence to basic European values and we never hesitated about the path chosen. Our determination to move ahead toward deeper political and economic integration with the European Union was never exposed to doubt.

The Republican Party of Armenia is the ruling political force in my country. We have long political experience and a bright historical record shaped in the dissident movements that rocked the foundations of the Soviet Union. Our political doctrine is based on the ideas of constitutional liberalism, as well as on the traditional values of the Armenian people and the Armenian Apostolic Church. In particular, we adhere to such key values as freedom, equality, solidarity, democracy and human rights.

As a right-wing political party, the Republican Party of Armenia has applied for an observer’s status within the European People’s Party. I wish to take this opportunity to reaffirm our firm determination to get EPP membership.

We are committed to cooperating with you on the basis of a dialog as we have widely shared political aspirations and objectives. I am confident that by cooperating with those European political forces with which we have a common ideological basis, we can build on our expertise and enrich our ideological basis. I do believe that the EPP membership will facilitate Armenia’s international cooperation and its integration with the European Union in full compliance with the policy of Government.

The European Union plays an important role to play in establishing peace and stability in South Caucasus. It has a unique status in terms of bringing about positive changes in our region for two reasons: firstly, the European Union has wide experience and resources for the promotion of reforms in our countries. Being the European Union’s visiting card in our region, the program of Eastern Partnership is supposed to pave the way for large-scale reforms in all the spheres of our life.

Secondly, strong with its hard-earned democracy, the European Union has the exclusive ability to help us meet challenges through dialogue, cooperation and compromise.

This may become its most important impact as tolerance and dialog are the keys to successful regional cooperation.

Thank you.”
