Attended by Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, Rustaveli Street as renovated under Kumayri Historical Center Development Program was re-commissioned in Gyumri

Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan traveled to Gyumri to attend the opening of rehabilitated Rustaveli Street, which has been renovated under the Kumayri Historical Center Development program. Rustaveli Street is home to numerous buildings and facilities of historical and cultural significance, some of which are being restored within the framework of private projects.

During the tour, the Prime Minister got acquainted with the outcome of reconstruction work carried out on an area of about 9000 square meters in Rustaveli Street as part of the Kumayri Historical Center Development Program. On March 21, 2017, the Shirak Marz gasification and gas supply branch of Gazprom Armenia CJSC was authorized to initiate demolition works at the Rustaveli Street section going from Shirakatsi Street down to Sayat-Nova Street.

The communication systems (gas supply and water pipes, electric wiring, etc.) in the street have been completely rehabilitated. The street has been coated with new granite slabs and furnished with lighting facilities, benches and vases. The design work was carried out by Haynakhagits OJSC.

Prime Minister Karapetyan highlighted the importance of the Kumayri Historical Center Development program, the rehabilitation of historical-cultural assets in Shiraz and Rustaveli streets, as well as the improvement of infrastructures in the public-private sector cooperation format.

The historical center in Gyumri will feature arts, crafts and recreational centers, different business projects and amenities for tourists, as well as an active environment for pedestrians. An area of 7700 square meters has been earmarked for business activities on these streets to bring about different ideas.

Addressing news reporters, the Premier said he very much liked the renovated street and went on to note that Shiraz Street was the next one to be reconstructed under the Kumayri Historical Center Development program. Construction work is due to start next March.

“We will definitely bring to completion the Kumayr Historical Center Development program. I think Rustaveli Street has a taste and smell of its own today. Our main goal is to preserve Gyumri’s local color and originality,” Karen Karapetyan pointed out.

The Gyumri residents thanked the Prime Minister for keeping Gyumri in the spotlight and implementing the Kumayr Historical Center Development program. During the tour, the Premier was introduced to various investment programs and buildings-facilities rehabilitated under private projects.

Mayor of Gyumri Samvel Balasanyan advised that the city infrastructure will be developed and improved in the near future through major road construction projects supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Karen Karapetyan next visited the newly opened Gyumri visitors’ information center to get acquainted with the services provided by the latter. The Center shall provide tourists with every necessary detail about Armenia, including Gyumri, where the guests will get full information about our country’s sights and tourist attractions.
